Moxibustion

The ancient art of warming and healing Moxibustion, moxa for short, is one of the oldest healing practices in Chinese medicine, predating acupuncture itself. It involves the burning of dried mugwort herb near or on specific acupuncture points to warm the area, stimulate circulation, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Moxa is deeply warming and nourishing, and particularly effective for conditions involving cold, deficiency, and stagnation. Moxa can be used to support chronic pain, digestive weakness, fatigue, reproductive health, and immune function. Many patients find it profoundly relaxing and deeply comforting, because the warmth penetrates in a way that feels both ancient and immediately healing.

I provide Moxa sticks to hold near acupuncture points for general warming and circulation support to my patients for home use as part of their treatment plan. I will show you how to use it safely and effectively at home between appointments, and I will advise on frequency and duration based on your specific condition and constitution.

A note on safety

Moxa produces smoke and a distinctive earthy aroma. Please inform me if you have respiratory sensitivities or asthma before your appointment. Smokeless moxa is available as an alternative.

Moxa is provided to patients as part of their treatment plan. Ask Mari at your next appointment whether moxa is appropriate for your condition.
